Maine Family FCU hopes that you will find these tips helpful while decorating for the holidays.

1. Consider purchasing LED lights which use less energy and run cooler than traditional incandescent lights.
2. Inspect all electrical decorations for damage before use.
3. Do not place extension cords where they could cause a tripping hazard, like doorways.
4. Indoors or outside, use only lights that have been approved by Underwriters Laboratory. “UL” will be clearly displayed on the tag, signifying the product has been inspected for potential safety hazards.
5. Avoid overloading outlets.
6. Turn off all indoor and outdoor electrical decorations before leaving home or going to sleep. Lights could short and start a fire.
7. Use no more than three standard-size sets of lights per single extension cord.
8. Never use electric lights on a metallic tree. The tree can become charged with electricity from faulty lights, and a person touching a branch could be electrocuted.

We wish you and yours a very safe and happy holiday season.
